Anonymous asked: As a white feminist and activist, I understand that a lot of the things I want to be involved in can be very euro and ciscentric. In the past, my ignorance only led me to be angered by manarchists, but that is obviously just one small part of a culture of oppression, much of which I will never have to deal with or notice. My question is this, is it possible for me to be active in class issues and feminism when so many of these issues are obviously, at their core, issues of white oppression?
Yes, it’s completely possible for you to be active in the struggle against oppression, even though in many cases, whether you like it or not, you are the oppressor. I think it’s important to remember, no matter your intentions, you can’t escape the fact that because of your privileges you will never fully understand oppressions that you do not suffer from. This means that, even(maybe especially) when you think you’re being the best ally ever, you could quite possibly be perpetuating oppression.
So, to answer your question, if you want to be active in struggles against oppression, you have to learn to shut the fuck up and let those who actually experience the oppression talk. You have to volunteer, not as a leader or a spokesman, but as a foot soldier. Take direction. Don’t argue. And for fuck’s sake, don’t make everything about your struggle with your own oppressions or privileges. Don’t expect gratitude or kindness or patience, because sometimes we don’t have it to give. If you need a pat on the back, you should probably go somewhere else.
